Interview with an Animation Student cont’d.
This is the final part of the interview with Nayab Hasan, an animation student presently attending TGCAnimation and Multimedia College.

DIA: What other software are you going to work on?
STUDENT: We are going to work on Autodesk Maya, Adobe Aftereffects Fusion Hopefully.

DIA: Which particular software has been the easiest for you?
STUDENT: Autodesk 3DS Max, has actually not been the easiest, but it has been the most challenging and is my favorite, the easiest would definitely be Photoshop. Everybody knows one thing or two about Photoshop.

DIA: Have you participated in any competition so far?
STUDENT: So far, I personally haven’t but those in the third year are presently participating in a short animation film contest.

DIA: What other activity does your animation program entail?
STUDENT: Seminars, there are weekly seminars and then a student of the month competitions; I have been a student of the month twice, for digital painting in Photoshop and 3D game character design in 3DS Max.

DIA: Do you have your own personal workstation or do you work in your school Lab?
STUDENT: No, I don’t have a personal workstation, but I hope to buy soon. I do all my work in the school Lab. Someone, I know just assembled their personal workstation for about 55000 Rupees and I have started working towards that too. In the next twelve months, I hope to set up my own workstation. It would make work easier for me and I would be able to do so much work in the night as well. I also have a laptop though, but my laptop can only handle Photoshop and a few small 3DS Max files, after a while the menus stop showing and the laptop freezes.

DIA: After school, what do you intend to do?
STUDENT: I would love to work in an animation studio and be part of an animation work. Working in a studio would help me garner experience. My dream would be to own my own animation studio and make high quality animated feature films in India and
worldwide.

DIA: Describe a typical day in the life of an animation student like yourself.
STUDENT: Well, I wake up mostly around 8 am, pray, have breakfast, get dressed and come to class by 10. Most of my classes start from 10 till around 4 or 5 pm, then I do some practice work and head back to the PG by 6. The evenings are usually spent surfing the internet, going over school work, eating, playing video games, watching a sci-fi movie, sleeping or hanging out with friends. I always try to maintain a balance in my life. A balanced mind is a creative mind.

DIA: What is your dream animation job?
STUDENT:  Working in Walt Disney, being a modeler at Walt Disney or Pixar.

DIA: what advice do you have for students that intend to study animation?
STUDENT: Well, they have to have the interest first, the animation is not just a second option if something else fails. You have to be willing to do the work because animation can be overwhelming.
